This is a subject close to my heart as I have a 3 year old son. I would say on the whole that travelling with children in the Czech Republic is a positive experience. Czechs tend to be family orientated and love well behaved children and you will find complete strangers helping you on and off trams and buses and giving up their seats for you, which I found a refreshing change. It’s not all of my friend’s experiences but it certainly has been mine, a helpless smile can go a long way in life! If you are waiting for a tram and need extra time with kiddies, prams or if you’re just not so quick on your feet, as the tram approaches the stop wave at the driver. I’m serious! Just flag him and he will normally acknowledge you and then he will allow you extra time to board the tram. Buggies and pushchairs should board the tram at the rear door.
Don’t be afraid to breastfeed in public here, there is absolutely no problem, be it at a railway station or in a restaurant or coffee shop.
Children are welcome in restaurants, bar’s and pubs but will be expected to behave! Czech pubs can be unbelievable smoky and you probably wouldn’t want to take your kiddies into that type of environment.
Baby changing facilities in the centre can be found at Mothercare, Marks and Spencer, McDonalds (if you are a customer) and all shopping centres. Public toilets can be found in most tube stations, book shops and department stores. Be aware that you have to pay to use them so have change to hand. The cost can be between 3 and an unbelievable 10 CZK (Debenhams). Good old M&S are free.
Bohemia Bagel off Old Town Square (Masna Street) has a small children’s play area as do some McDonalds, (Vodickova Street, off Wenceslas Square) and Kentucky Fried Chicken (Narodni Trida), across the road from Tesco. As I come across more kiddie areas, I will update the website.
Two restaurants that I have eaten at with super child areas are an Italian restaurant call La Boca in Truhlarska street, which is opposite Kotva Department Store and Sunday brunch at the Movenpick, in Smichov, Prague 5. The Movenpick costs 780czk per person which includes czech wine and beer.
