Amusing kids in Prague (and parents too)

You are spoilt for choice here especially in the summer months. There are a variety of different tours of the Vltava, departing from various points and if the weather is nice a lovely way to spend an hour or so. Ask at your reception for their recommendation or you can easily find your own by just strolling along the river.
There are “Prague by night” cruises that last 4 hours and cost approx. 1100Kc not inclueding drinks. There are also Vltatva river crusies that inclusive of lunch which last about 2 hourse.
The boat trip along the river to the zoo and Troja Castle is good value for money. Having said that you really do need to like children. I went during the summer and even with a child of my own if it were a leisurely boat trip I wanted I would of been happy to pay the extra money.
You can also rent pedal boats (there’s a fab one in the shape of a big white swan), and rowing boats.
There are now also Jazz cruises to choose from. You sit and relax and enjoy a live Jazz band whilse

Vintage trams run from Vystaviste, along the banks of Mala Strana, through Wenceslas Square (Václavské namasti) and finnish at Prague Castle. These charming bone shakers are a quaint way of seeing Prague that doesn’t involve wearing out shoe leather and will also keep the kids happy! You can pick up the tram at any of its stops.

Letna is my favourite park in Prague and my local one. The big playground there is divided into play areas for older and younger children and can get very busy at weekends. During the spring and summer there is a beer garden open at Letensky Zamecek in Letna, which gives you a fantastic panorama of Prague, beautiful surroundings and a lovely atmosphere, one of my favourite ways to spend a summers evening and all for free. Beer is reasonably priced but don’t be afraid to bring your own alcohol and to ask to share a table, which is considered normal practice here. Entertainment comes in the form of anything and anyone, people playing guitars and such like. One summer evening we were treated to an American swing band who just wanted to play and our little son danced the night away while his parents drank beer. Perfect!

03 Technical Museum.jpg

A small and compact museum near to Letna park, the museum offers an amazing assortment of old planes, vintage cars, trains, motorcycles and bicycles. Well worth a visit especially for older children the museum is small and interesting enough to keep everyone happy for an hour or so, a firm favourite in my household.
Admission is 70czk for adults and 30czk for students and and children up to 18.

***The museum is currently closed due to a complet reconstruction. The plan is to re-open the museum to mark the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of its establishment, which the museum will celebrate in July 2008***

On the top of Petrin Hill there is a mirror maze which offers good old fashioned fun and an observatory that may be of interest to older children. You can reach the top of the hill by the funicular that starts at Ujezd Street (tram 12, 22 or 23). Use a normal tram ticket for the funicular, it runs April to October 9am to 11.30 pm and November to March 9.00am to 10.20.
